Social skills
Social skills are the skills we use every day to interact, communicate and connect with others. These skills require both verbal and non-verbal communication skills. At Blacktown Speech Pathology we will help support and build your child’s social skills to promote positive communication and interactions with others
Improving conversational skills
Some examples include:
- How to keep a conversation going, asking and answering questions, interrupting, staying on topic and taking turns to talk and listen
- How to share and take turns during play
- Social stories tailored to your child and their needs
- Understanding and interpreting body language and reading non-verbal social cues
- Using manners
- Understanding and expressing emotions
- Emotional regulation: teaching your child how to control their emotions, and ‘size of the problem verse size of reaction’
- Forming and maintaining friendships
- Teach empathy skills, so your child can look at others perspective
- Discuss the importance of personal space
